ELECTION NIGHT ROLLERCOASTER
Shortly after 11 PM, Conservative Leader John Rustad took to the stage but he did not concede to the NDP.
Talking to a packed room of supporters he said there are still votes to be counted and a win is still possible. He thanked his volunteers for making 2024 a historic showing for the BC Conservatives. He also thanked his wife for her support.
At the time of Rustads speech the standings were NDP 46, BC Conservatives 45, Greens 2. 47 seats are needed for a majority.
Shortly after Rustads speech Premier David Eby addressed his supporters saying
it was a hard fought campaign and it looks like everyone is going to have to wait a little bit longer to get the final election result.
Premier Eby continued saying he doesn't know what that final count will be but what he does know there was a clear majority for the progressive values of the NDP.
Original Story: 10:30 PM Election Day: Pre election polls predicted a tight race and it looks like they were right. Despite new vote-counting machines and an impressive number of British Columbians casting early ballots, the results have been rolling out excruciatingly slowly.
The night has been marked by a back-and-forth between the NDP and the BC Conservatives.
As of 10:30 Saturday night there was still no clear leader
About 20 minutes after polls closed at 8 pm. the two parties, were hovering just short of the 47 seats needed for a majority.
The night was an emotional rollercoaster for candidates and supporters alike as the two parties jockeyed for the lead.
As the back and forth continued some riding candidates were separated by a handful of votes, A reminder that every vote counts.
NDP Leader David Eby won his riding in Vancouver-Point Grey, as did BC Conservative Leader John Rustad securing re-election in the riding of Nechako Lakes.
Green Party Leader Sonia Furstenau lost her fight for a seat in the Victoria-Beacon Hill riding.
47 SEATS NEEDED FOR MAJORITY
A District Electoral Officer can request a judicial recount is there is a tie or a difference of 1 out of 500 votes.
A candidate can request a recount if the difference is less than 100 votes.
It's not clear at this writing if mail in votes will play a deciding roll in this razor thin election
