Vernon Fire Rescue responded to a fire at the Vernon Wholesale Club grocery store, located at 25th and Highway 97.
The call was received shortly before 2 PM, prompting the evacuation of staff and customers while firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.
Accessing the fire proved challenging as it originated inside a large garbage compactor situated on the west side of the building.
The fire is currently being treated as suspicious.
Due to the nature and location of the fire, a third alarm was issued.
In a press release, the City of Vernon's Deputy Fire Chief Alan Honfsink says
“Smoke did enter the business, and as a result, the building was evacuated,” "However, thanks to the quick and precise action of our firefighters, the fire was contained to a single area and did not extend to the building.”
