History of Kalavista: Coldstream’s Log House Slated for Demolition

Kalavista, one of the earliest areas developed in Coldstream, BC, was acquired from Indigenous groups in the early 1900s. Over the years, this scenic region has become a significant part of Coldstream’s identity, known for its natural beauty and recreational spaces.

A notable piece of this history is the Kalavista Log House, a building that has been a fixture in the neighbourhood but is now slated for demolition.

The Kalavista Log House, constructed in the early 20th century, has long been a focal point in the community. It has been used for various purposes over the years and has witnessed many changes in the area.

In the early 2010s, just like today, the Coldstream District conducted a survey to gather residents' opinions on the future of the Kalavista area, including the property log house resides. Many residents expressed a desire to preserve the natural environment while maintaining some community-use spaces.

In 2017, the log house faced potential demolition after severe flooding caused mold and air quality issues. The Coldstream Council decided to save the building temporarily, addressing immediate damages and postponing a final decision. Despite these efforts, the building's condition continued to deteriorate.

As Coldstream moves forward with a new survey to shape the community’s future, the decision has been made to demolish the Kalavista Log House.

Current council has concluded because of the building’s maintenence and repair costs it is no longer feasible to preserve.

The area where the log house stands will be restored to a more natural state.

The Kalavista Rotary Pier at Kal Beach, another key community feature, is being replaced with a new steel structure due to the high maintenance costs of the old wooden pier.

As Coldstream reflects on its plans for the future, the demolition of the Kalavista Log House represents the end of an era.

This decision highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing historical preservation with evolving community needs.

Coldstream residents are encouraged to participate in the current survey to help shape Coldstream’s future, ensuring that the area’s rich history continues to inform its development.
