Halloween in Coldstream, Vernon, and Area: Fun, Festivities, and Safety First.

Halloween is just around the corner, and soon the streets will be filled with excited trick-or-treaters.

With all the spooky excitement, it's a great time for some friendly reminders to keep everyone safe.

The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP has passed along some tips to help make this Halloween enjoyable and memorable for all the right reasons.

Here’s what you need to know for a safe Halloween in the Coldstream, Vernon, and North Okanagan areas.

Halloween Safety Tips from the RCMP

  • Costumes: Make sure costumes are visible in the dark, and that masks don’t obstruct the wearer’s vision. Reflective tape, glow sticks, or flashlights can help children stay visible to drivers.

  • Route Planning: Review a trick-or-treat route with your child before they set out. A pre-arranged meeting time and place will make it easier to keep track of everyone.

  • Street Safety: Children should cross streets at corners and crosswalks, looking both ways before crossing. Remind them to stick with their friends and avoid going inside houses while trick-or-treating.

  • Drivers: Halloween night means extra foot traffic, so be vigilant for little ghouls and goblins darting between homes. Keep speeds low, especially in residential areas, and minimize distractions.

Fireworks Reminders in Vernon and Coldstream

Fireworks are popular on Halloween, but remember that consumer fireworks and sky lanterns are prohibited within Vernon, Coldstream, and other North Okanagan communities.

Fireworks carry risks of injury and fires, which can have lasting consequences.

Fire Chief David Lind from Vernon Fire Rescue Services advises residents to explore safer alternatives, like glow sticks, flameless candles, or even a movie night. Be aware that fines of up to $300 may apply for illegal use or storage of fireworks, and enforcement officers will be out to ensure compliance.

Where to Catch Halloween Fireworks:

For those looking for a festive firework display, there are a few exciting events hosted by local fire departments:

  • Coldstream Hallowe'en Fireworks: Gather at Kal Beach on Halloween night, where the Coldstream Fire Hall will host a bonfire and hot chocolate service starting at 7:15 p.m., with fireworks set to light up the sky at 8:00 p.m.

  • Armstrong Spallumcheen Fireworks: Head to the Armstrong Fair Grounds to enjoy a community bonfire and fireworks show. The bonfire will be lit at 7:15 p.m., followed by hot dogs, hot chocolate, and a fireworks display starting at 7:45 p.m. Donations in support of Muscular Dystrophy Canada are welcome.

  • BX Swan Lake Fire Department (Unconfirmed): Traditionally, the BX Swan Lake Fire Department holds a Halloween event with food, a bonfire, and fireworks starting around 8:00 p.m. Check for updates on this event closer to Halloween night.

Don't forget the excellent Field of Screams

Field of Screams 11 promises a night of unparalleled horror and excitement, with each of the four mazes offering a fully immersive experience enhanced by dedicated actors and intricate set designs. Don’t miss your chance to confront your fears and experience the ultimate fright fest of the season!

Weather Forecast and Dressing for the Night

Halloween night in the North Okanagan is expected to be cloudy with a high of 7°C and a nighttime low around -1°C. Make sure everyone in your group is dressed warmly, and consider layering costumes for comfort and safety.

Finally, don’t forget your pets or any nearby livestock, as many animals find fireworks unsettling. Keeping them indoors or in a quiet area can help them feel safe and reduce their stress during the festivities.

By keeping these simple tips in mind, we can all contribute to a safe and spirited Halloween in the Vernon and Coldstream communities.
