Demolition Preparations Underway for Kalavista Log House in Coldstream

February 2, 2025 – Coldstream, BC – The long-standing Kalavista Log House is set to be demolished, with crews on-site preparing the structure for removal.

For the past two weeks, workers have been systematically clearing the interior of the building, removing stoves, shelving, and furniture in preparation for asbestos abatement.

Asbestos has been found in multiple areas, including the walls, ceiling, and the chinking material used to seal the gaps between the logs. Before demolition can proceed, the building must be wrapped in protective plastic to prevent contamination.

Outside, crews are in the process of enclosing the structure with a white plastic containment barrier. This step is necessary to safely remove hazardous materials before demolition begins.

The Kalavista Log House, built in the early 20th century, has been a historic feature in the Coldstream community for decades. In 2017, the structure faced potential demolition after flooding caused mold and air quality issues.

While temporary repairs were made, ongoing deterioration and high maintenance costs led Coldstream Council to approve its removal.

The site will be restored to a more natural state as part of broader community planning efforts. The nearby Kalavista Rotary Pier at Kal Beach is also being replaced with a modern steel structure due to the high cost of maintaining the existing wooden pier.

With demolition now imminent, the Kalavista Log House will soon become a part of Coldstream’s history, marking the end of an era for the area.
