CHASE, BC — April 8, 2025 — A washout triggered by nearly 4mm of rainfall in the North Okanagan has closed a 2.5 km stretch of Highway 1 between Squilax Turtle Valley Road and Little River Road, just east of Chase.
The slide occurred overnight, and DriveBC’s highway camera astonishingly captured the event in a series of still images as it unfolded — a rare and dramatic look at the moment mud and debris spilled across the road.
The closure, affecting both directions of the Trans-Canada Highway, was first reported early Tuesday morning. As of 4:40 a.m., crews were on scene clearing the debris. By the looks of the latest DriveBC camera feed, the mud and equipment have been removed, suggesting that a reopening is imminent.
Until the highway reopens, travelers are being rerouted via Highway 97 to Highway 97A/B. Motorists are advised to check DriveBC for the latest road conditions before travelling.
