Greater Vernon Trails & Natural Spaces Project Grant Awards Announced
The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) has announced the recipients of its annual grant funding for community projects aimed at enhancing trails and natural spaces. The grants support initiatives that improve public access and benefit both Greater Vernon residents and visitors.
For 2025, the RDNO received five applications for funding, with three projects selected for grants:
Friends of the Okanagan Rail Trail Society
Awarded $5,000 to install a new wayfinding kiosk at Kekuli Bay along the Okanagan Rail Trail.
North Okanagan Naturalist Club
Granted $7,800 for improvements at the Swan Lake Nature Reserve, including new plantings and the installation of benches.
North Okanagan Cycling Society
Pre-approved for a total of $50,000 to rehabilitate and construct trails at Vernon Hill. Of this, $11,350 was allocated in 2024, and an additional $38,650 has been included in the 2025 budget. This funding is contingent on receiving Section 57 approval from Recreation Sites and Trails BC, a regulatory process that ensures the proposed work complies with provincial standards for environmental protection, public safety, and sustainable trail development.
The approval process involves a review of the project plan, including assessments of potential impacts on the natural environment and existing recreational use.
