Record Early Turnout at Advance Polls, But Frustration Over Long Wait Times
April 20, 2025: Elections Canada reports that nearly 2 million Canadians voted on Friday, April 18, the first day of advance voting for the 45th federal election, the highest turnout ever recorded for the opening day of early polls.

By comparison, over 34% of voters chose advance voting in the previous federal election, and this year appears likely to exceed that figure.
However, the high turnout has not come without challenges. Across the country, many voters shared frustration on social media about long wait times, accessibility issues, and lack of seating at polling stations, particularly affecting seniors and those with mobility issues. In some locations, voters waited well over an hour, and some even left without casting their ballots.
That said, early reports suggest that wait times improved on day two, as Elections Canada made adjustments to better manage the heavy turnout.
Advance voting continues through Monday, April 21, with polls open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Voters must cast their ballot at their assigned polling station, which can be found on their voter information card or by using the Elections Canada online tool.
To make the experience as quick and smooth as possible, Elections Canada encourages all electors to verify their correct polling location before heading out.
