With a dry year so far and fire season approaching, Vernon’s spring chipping program returns

March 17, 2025: With a dry start to the year and fire season approaching, keeping yards clear of excess branches and debris is more important than ever.

To help residents reduce fire hazards and tidy their properties, the City of Vernon is bringing back its annual spring chipping program.

Running from March 24 through April 17, the program offers homeowners a convenient way to dispose of pruning materials right from their curb.

This winter has seen lower than average precipitation putting residents on alert dried out branches, leaves, and other yard debris can quickly become fuel for wildfires.

By participating in the chipping program, residents not only improve their property’s appearance but also contribute to community-wide fire prevention efforts.

How the Program Works

Chipping crews will visit each neighborhood twice during the program, operating Monday through Thursday.

Chipping Schedule:

  • Vernon Main: March 24 - 27 & March 31 - April 3

  • Blue Jay & Foothills: April 7 & April 14

  • Okanagan Landing: April 8 - 10 & April 15 - 17

Pruning material should be placed in the same collection area as their garbage and organics carts.

Each household is allocated up to 10 minutes of chipping per week, so be properly prepared:

  • Keep branches under 4” in diameter

  • Stack all pruning with the butt ends facing the street or lane

  • Avoid mixing in roots, dirt, or tied bundles

  • Separate out thorny materials

  • Excessive or tangled piles may be left behind

Residents can always take their yard waste to the Greater Vernon Diversion and Disposal Facility free of charge.
