Vernon, BC – On Sunday, February 23, 2025, Vernon Search & Rescue (VSAR) was called into action twice in a single day to assist with winter rescues.
In the early morning, VSAR responded to a mutual aid request from Shuswap SAR to rescue two sledders trapped in the mountains east of Sicamous near Blue Lake. Due to avalanche risks, the team accessed the location by helicopter and safely winched the sledders aboard for transport. Though cold and hungry, the pair was unharmed.
Also involved in the rescue, the Air Rescue One Heli Winch Society Helicopter and the RCMP.
Later that evening, VSAR was called to rescue two individuals stranded in deep snow near Becker Lake, east of Vernon. After sliding off the road, the two managed to send an SOS via their iPhone.
Fortunately VSAR ground teams quickly found the pair and guided them back down the mountain to safety because they were reportedly not well prepared to spend a night on the mountain.
This incident is a good reminder of the importance of being prepared for winter conditions.
